  • BS, MA and PhD degrees from Purdue University and a MS from the Naval Postgraduate School
  • Dissertation on using analogies to learn abstract concepts for terms on Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Over 800 in study; quoted in Wall Street Journal
  • Current research interests: Risk Management in Disaster Management, Using Social Media for Emergency Management, Mass Evacuation, Mass Sheltering
  • Enlisted in the Navy in 1962, commissioned upon graduation from Purdue NROTC, and retired as a Captain with thirty years service as a Special Operations and Surface Warfare Officer
  • Continues to serve as a Naval Academy Information Officer for over 36 years
  • Retired from United States Steel Corporation and served as the Department Manager, Safety and Industrial Hygiene, U. S. Steel Gary Works
  • Served as Manager Environment, Safety, and Health Training for Argonne National Laboratory
  • Capella University. Currently teach Master’s students in Homeland Security, Emergency Management, and Business Continuity and mentors PhD candidates in Emergency Management
  • Over 160 graduate and undergraduate courses for Purdue, Purdue Calumet, Indiana University Northwest, Oklahoma State (for Korean Fire Service), and Saint Xavier Universities
  • Chair of the new NFPA Technical Committee on Common Mass Evacuation, Sheltering and Re-Entry.
  • Member of the Technical Committee for NFPA 1600 Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity for the 2004, 2007, 2010,  2013, and 2016 Editions
  • Member of the NFPA Committee on Emergency Services Risk Management
  • Commissioner on the Indiana Emergency Response Commission
  • Member of the Board, Emergency Management Alliance of Indiana
  • Certified as Safety Professional (CSP), Emergency Manager (CEM), Performance Technologist (CPT), Business Continuity Lead Auditor (CBCLA), and Indiana Professional Emergency Manager (PEM). Former Chair of the Certified Emergency Manager (CEM®) USA Commission
  • Safety Officer for the Indiana District One All Hazard Incident Management Team (Tyep 3) and qualification as trainer for the National Fire Academy on Incident Safety Officer
  • Former Chair, U.S. Technical Advisory Group and Head of Delegation for the ISO Technical Committee 223 on Societal Security and Project Lead for the development of the first ISO standard on exercises
